WIE Affinity Group



IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is a global network of IEEE members and volunteers dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists, and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic interests in careers that encompass engineering and science. The mission of WIE is to inspire, encourage and empower women worldwide.

Our goal is to facilitate the recruitment and retention of women in technical disciplines globally. We envision a vibrant community of IEEE women and men collectively using their diverse talents to innovate for the benefit of humanity.

IEEE WIE strives to…
1. Assist with the formation of new IEEE WIE Affinity Groups and support ongoing activities.
2. Recognize the outstanding achievements of women in engineering through IEEE Awards nominations.
3. Organize workshops at major technical conferences to enhance networking and to promote membership in IEEE WIE.
4. Advocate women in leadership roles in IEEE governance and career advancement for women in the profession.
5. Promote member grade advancement for women to the IEEE membership grades of Senior Member and Fellow.
6. Facilitate the development of programs and activities that promote the entry into, and retention of, women in engineering programs.
7. Administer the IEEE Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist (STAR) Program to mentor young women in junior high and high schools.

About Our Chapter


IEEE SB RIT WIE affinity group focuses on the technical and managerial empowerment of female students of the college, through a variety of educational and networking programs. It is always on the path to fulfilling its mission of bridging the prevalent gender gap in the industry through a focus – driven initiative to identify and solve challenges faced by young budding female engineers. The branch at present plans to conduct various technical workshops and managerial sessions to provide students a platform to improve their technical and interpersonal skills and be future-ready. Also, it plans to hold monthly meetups to improve networking among its members.

The branch has recently proved its worth in the Kerala Section as five of its budding members were chosen for receiving a travel grant to attend IEEE WIE ILS(IEEE WIE International Leadership Summit) at Bangalore and another team of five emerged as the winners of a hackathon conducted as part of WIE – Learn program by the Kerala Section.

Roboleading Women

As part of Women’s Day, IEEE RAS SBC RIT in collaboration with IEEE WIE AG RIT, organized an empowering talk session on the topic, ‘Opportunities for Women in the Field of Robotics’. The speaker for the event, Sethulakshmi S Nair, Executive Manager of I Hub Research and Robotics Pvt Ltd, emphasized the importance of practical and technical knowledge in robotics. She also discussed various opportunities available in the field, interview preparation, and the latest advancements in robotics such as VR, ROS, drone technology, embedded systems, and 3D printing. The speaker also highlighted the different domains in robotics and explained the role of AI in daily tasks, providing examples of tools that utilize AI. The event's interactive format encouraged active participation and allowed students to learn about the latest advancements in the field and better comprehend the robotics domain.

Leadership Luminaries

The Leadership Luminaries event, organized by IEEE WIE AG RIT on 2nd July 2024, celebrated IEEE WIE Day with a focus on leadership training and women empowerment. The session featured Dr. Jalaja MJ, Adjunct Professor at IIIT Kottayam, who delivered an inspiring talk on effective leadership and the potential of women in engineering and beyond. Her engaging presentation and interactive discussions left participants motivated and equipped with actionable insights. Attendees praised the event for its seamless organization and impactful content, highlighting its success in fostering meaningful dialogue and celebrating the role of women in leadership. The event reinforced the importance of empowering women in engineering and set a strong foundation for future initiatives.

AI Design Generation Competition

The AI Image Generation Competition, themed "Women in STEM," was organized by the IEEE WIE Kerala Section in collaboration with IEEE WIE AG RIT and IEEE WIE AG AJCE on 3rd April 2024 as part of WiEmerge Week. The competition aimed to encourage creativity and innovation in using artificial intelligence to empower women in STEM fields. Participants showcased visionary solutions to break barriers and promote gender inclusivity in technology. The winner, Ruth Tennyson from Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, shone with her exceptional design and passion for AI. The event successfully highlighted the creativity and dedication of participants, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration while advocating for gender diversity in STEM.

Tech Trailblazers

The online talk session, "Tech Trailblazers: Decoding the Corporate Ladder as a Woman in Tech," was organized by the IEEE WIE Kerala Section in collaboration with IEEE WIE AG RIT and IEEE WIE AG AJCE on 2nd April 2024. Featuring Ms. Saradha G, Associate Analyst at Tarento Technologies Pvt Ltd., the session provided practical strategies and insights for women navigating the corporate world. The event focused on overcoming challenges, building professional networks, and advancing in male-dominated industries. Participants praised the session for its empowering and interactive nature, leaving them inspired and equipped with actionable advice to excel in their careers. The event highlighted the importance of mentorship, resilience, and gender diversity in the tech industry, making it a resounding success.

Femessence Session 3: Human-Robot Interaction

The Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) session, meticulously designed to meet its objectives, proved to be an enlightening experience for all participants. The event was mentored by Ms. Shyamli Suneesh who is a robotics engineer and researcher. The session commenced with an exploration of the various sorts of user experience in human-robot interactions, delving into the factors that contribute to the effectiveness and satisfaction of these encounters.

Femessence Session 2: Robotics in Space Exploration

The second session of Femessence mentored by Ms. Srichitra S, a robotics engineer at Ignitarium, served as an enlightening and comprehensive exploration of the current opportunities and prospects in the intersection of robotics and space exploration. Delving into real-life examples, the session provided a detailed examination of ongoing projects and research initiatives that showcase the pivotal role of robotics in advancing our understanding of outer space. Attendees engaged in discussions on breakthroughs within the field, gaining insights into the cutting-edge technologies and methodologies employed in the development of robotic systems for space missions.

The discussion touched upon the transformative possibilities, such as increased efficiency, improved quality of life, and novel opportunities for collaboration between humans and machines.

Blogging Competition: Women in STEM

To foster a culture of learning and collaboration while encouraging individuals to share their knowledge and expertise on the topic of Women in STEM, IEEE WIE AG RIT collaborated with IEEE WIE AG CECTL to host an inspiring blogging competition.. The competition, held on September 17th, 2023, ignited the sparks of creativity and linguistic flair among participants, creating a unique platform to disseminate valuable information within the community. Through active participation, the competition unravelled the chapters of this compelling event, and participants reflected on its impact on both themselves and the broader community of language enthusiasts. The winner, Mr. Alwin Reju from RIT Kottayam, showcased his passion and insights in writing through a wonderful blog and was declared the winner. In conclusion, the competition successfully identified aspiring language enthusiasts with great dedication and creativity. Their passion for writing and advocacy for gender diversity in STEM was truly commendable.

She Technia Session 3: Metaverse

On May 15th, 2023, the IEEE RFID Student Council Kerala Section and IEEE WIE AG RIT collaborated on the third session of the She Technia Talk series, on the topic of 'Metaverse'. Dr. Gayathri S Warrier, Assistant Professor, CSE, SCMS School of Engineering and Technology, was the distinguished speaker. The session had 51 participants and focused on discussing the concept and implications of the metaverse on various industries. The interactive presentation format allowed attendees to engage with the speaker and gain valuable insights that can be applied to their personal and professional endeavours.

Career Catalyst Session 2: All About Communication and Networking

IEEE WIE AG RIT's second session of their Career Catalyst Talk Series, on communication and networking, was held on 30th May 2023. The session featured Ms. Sona Philip, an expert in the field, who shared her knowledge and insights on effective communication techniques and strategies for building strong professional networks. The session attracted 28 participants and included interactive exercises to enhance the learning experience. Sona Philip's engaging presentation style effectively conveyed the importance of communication and networking skills in professional settings. Overall, the event empowered attendees with practical knowledge and actionable strategies to improve their communication abilities and expand their professional networks.

Career Catalyst Session 1: All About LinkedIn

IEEE WIE AG RIT organized Career Catalyst, a talk series on career development, with the first session on LinkedIn held on 5th May 2023 via Google Meet. The session had 39 participants and featured Ms. Sidhi A S, WIP Student Representative, IEEE PES KC, and Vice Chair, IEEE SB CEK as the speaker. The talk covered various aspects of LinkedIn, including profile optimization, content creation, networking, and job-searching strategies, emphasizing the importance of a strong personal brand. Participants actively engaged in the discussion, and the session concluded with actionable takeaways. The event also provided networking opportunities, and attendees were encouraged to connect on LinkedIn. Overall, the event was a resounding success, empowering professionals in their career journeys.

Tech It Out

IEEE WIE AGs of RIT Kottayam, CE Kidangoor and CE Perumon joimtly conducted Tech It Out, an Online Coding Competition in association with WIEvacity Week 2021 on 6th may 2021. The competition was conducted on Hackerrank. Questions are added at regular intervals and participants will be notified about the same. To ensure fair play, some guidelines were set to stick on to. Participants are ranked by score and according to the rank winners are selected. Sidharth Ajithkumar (RIT Kottayam) got the First and Anjana K T (GEC Thrissur) got second prize.

Magnavox

As part of WiEvacity WiE week 2021 celebrations, WiE of IEEE SB RIT together with IEEE SB CEK and IEEE SB College of Engineering, Perumon conducted MAGNAVOX, a Doodling Competition. We started collecting entries from April 30th, 2021 and collected till May 8th, 2021. The entries were collected through Google Forms. We provided prizes worth Rs.1000 to the winners. Certificates of participation were given to all participants. We selected volunteers from our college and their support was quite appreciable. The best three among the entries were selected.

IEEE WIE Affinity Group of IEEE SB RIT organised a Blogging Competition as part of International Women's Day Celebrations on the theme "Break out to Challenge Yourself". The participants expressed their strong will to challenge themselves through their entries.

Zestia, a science quiz competition as part of Science Week Celebrations was organised on 27th February 2021 at 6pm, jointly by IEEE IAS SBC RIT, WIE Affinity Group of IEEE SB RIT and Bodhi RIT Quiz Club. There were 17 participants from different colleges.

To help students make an informed decision on suitable career choices and the preparation for moving towards that field, WIE AG of IEEE SB RIT organized “A chat with Nikita Uday” on 27th September 2020. The event was hosted by Irene Ann, S5 ECE. Nikita Uday, Technical Consultant Microsoft shared her preparation strategy and job recruitment procedures.

To motivate and usher more women to take up STEM careers, Women In Engineering Affinity Group of IEEE SB RIT and IEEE PES SBC RIT jointly organised an event "Your Shine Can Glow the World", a talk by Ms Mehak Azeem, Biomedical Engineer | UG Researcher | IBA IEEE Region-10 SAC 2020 Member | World’s SDG Regional Advocate 2020 on 18th July 2020. She inspired the attendees by highlighting the core values a girl should carry in her mind while making career choices.

To inspire and introduce the participants to the foundational concepts of entrepreneurship, WIE AG of IEEE SB RIT organized an exclusive webinar on the topic- ‘Women in entrepreneurship’. The session was handled by Juliana Biju, Co-founder at UpTown and IEEE PIE Secretary, Kerala. She reflected on her journey and the challenges that she faced while building her business.

The 4th ‘WIE Learn and Share’ session was organized on 21st June 2020, on the topic – ‘Chatbot using Dialogflow’.The webinar was presented by Jyothi Prasad, S6 CSE. Participants were given step by step instructions on how to build, secure, and scale a chatbot by using Dialogflow on Google Cloud.

A Mother's day special Technical ideathon was organized from 8th May to 10th May, 2020, jointly by IEEE RAS SB RIT and WIE Affinity Group of IEEE SB RIT with the theme- 'Addressing homemaker's woes through technology'. About 9 teams participated in the event and submitted their solutions to combat various challenges faced by a homemaker by means of appropriate technology.
